Letter to our referring physicians

Dear Colleague,

We at the Lougheed Maternity Group (LMG) would like to provide some clarification of the prenatal services that we provide. As you likely know, we are a group of female and male Family Physicians that practice at the Mosaic Medical Clinic in the Sunridge Professional Building. We deliver our babies at the Peter Lougheed Hospital. Being Family Physicians, we are able to see patients for antenatal care if they are low-risk. We hope that the information provided here will help you make an appropriate recommendation to your patient regarding the most suitable obstetrical provider.

We are pleased to provide the following services at the Mosaic Medical Clinic in addition to medical care by the physician:

  • On-site psychological services

  • On-site social work services

  • Access to FREE prenatal nutrition, Breastfeeding, and Labour & Delivery classes

  • Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) located next door and ultrasound providers nearby

  • Walking distance from Rundle C-train station

  • Access to interpretation services through Language Line Interpretation

  • Postpartum care for mother and newborn care for up to six weeks postpartum

  • Care for women who are battling substance use in pregnancy with support from community addictions services programs

  • Breastfeeding support and provision of breastfeeding clinic referrals as needed

We ask that you consider the following criteria before referring to the Lougheed Maternity Group:

  1. Does the patient want to deliver at Peter Lougheed Hospital?
(If no, then please refer appropriately elsewhere)

  2. Is the patient okay to be seen by a male doctor?  Most of the time we can book patients in with a female doctor in the clinic but cannot guarantee a female doctor for delivery.
(If no, and low risk, consider referral to Maternity Care Clinic in Harvest Hills if patient agreeable)

  3. Is the patient high risk or have any of the conditions listed here? (If yes, then should be referred to an OB)

  •  Pre-existing hypertension

  • Type 2 Diabetes

  • Pre-pregnancy BMI >40

  • Chronic kidney disease

  • Uncontrolled medical condition or acute medical disorder

  • Placenta Previa

  • Multifetal gestation

  • More than one previous c-section

  • previous uterine surgery

Please refer to our  LMG Guidelines for accepting prenatal patients for detailed descriptions of our acceptance criteria.

We ask that you order first trimester investigations for your patients:

  • All patients should have a first-trimester ultrasound between 8-12 wks gestational age.

  • Integrated First Trimester screening (IFTS) should be discussed with all pregnant women, regardless of age. It is time-sensitive and requires both blood work and ultrasound. The ultrasound MUST be done between 11wks gestational age to 13 weeks +6 days gestational age. Currently, EFW Radiology is the only clinic in Calgary that offers IFTS.

  • The following blood tests should be discussed with all women and be ordered in the first trimester: CBC, ferritin, urinalysis, urine culture and sensitivity, chlamydia and gonorrhea screening, blood group and antibody screening, and serological testing for HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Varicella, and Rubella.

MNCY Antenatal Pathways is an excellent additional resource that outlines the care of pregnant patients in Alberta.

Thank you for helping us ensure that our mutual patients get the best care they deserve. If you have any obstetrical care or referral-related questions, please call our office and one of our staff or physicians would be pleased to help you.

Sincerely,

Lougheed Maternity Group Family Physicians
