Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do in case of an obstetrical emergency?

  • In case of emergency please call 9-1-1 or go to the Peter Lougheed Hospital (PLC), or your nearest hospital. If you are more than 12 wks pregnant go directly to the 3rd floor, Maternity Triage unit at PLC. Nurses and doctors will be there to assist you. If you are less than 12 wks pregnant go to the PLC Main Emergency Room triage area.

  • You may call our office anytime during business hours if you have questions. After hours, please call Health Link at 8-1-1 to speak to a nurse and/or be directed to our after-hours clinic.

Can you tell me about how the Lougheed Maternity Group call group works?

  • Many physicians belong to our call group and we take turns providing maternity care at the clinic and delivery services at the hospital. You will have the chance to meet several of us at the clinic at the time of your prenatal appointments.

  • The doctor who is involved with your delivery is the one who is on call at the hospital on the day that you deliver.

Can you tell me about how medical learners may be involved in my care?

  • The Mosaic Medical Clinic and the PLC are University of Calgary Medical School teaching sites.

  • During your prenatal visits and/or labour and delivery, medical students and resident doctors (interns) may be involved in your care. When residents receive enough teaching and experience, they are more likely to feel confident and competent to include obstetrics as part of their own Family Practices. We are very grateful for patients who allow these learners to participate under our supervision.

  • We will respect your wishes if you do not want to have a learner present.

How long will I stay in hospital after the baby is born?

Usually, women who had a vaginal delivery stay in hospital for 24-48 hours, and women who have had a cesarean section stay 48-72 hours.

Is it possible to get a tour of the PLC labour and delivery unit?

An in-person tour is not possible at this time. We welcome you to participate in a virtual video tour of PLC Labour and Delivery.

Does LMG see the baby and me postpartum?

Yes! Once you deliver, our clinic will be notified and any existing pregnancy-related appointments will be cancelled. We will see both you and baby 5-7 days after delivery and continue to provide your medical needs for six weeks postpartum. At that time we will organize care coordination back to your Family Physician.
